It’s shout-out time. My buddy Justin has been working his tailbone off for the past 18 years or so on his comic book Hero House. Well, I’m pleased to finally announce (mainly because it means he’ll stop complaining to me regularly about all the delays and problems involved in getting your own comic published… kidding, Justin!) that Hero House is being published by Arcana and will be hitting comic book shops this November. Even better, if you’re lucky enough to hit San Diego Comic-Con this week, you can pick up an early copy at the Arcana booth.

So what is Hero House about? Oh, roughly 104 pages or so. Haw haw. Sorry, I couldn’t resist. It’s the story of teen superhero Nate Hedges. Formerly the star of his high school, Nate quickly finds himself a small fish in a big pond of superheroes once he hits college. At the center of that pond is Epsilon Epsilon Psi, a frat dedicated to preparing superpowered students for the real world. But something’s not quite right, and the university’s president taps Nate to investigate the Eps. What he finds will either crush him or offer him the salvation he’s been looking for.

So why should you buy Hero House? Well, for starters it sports a spiffy Ed McGuinness cover. And second, it’s written by Justin Aclin, head writer of Twisted ToyFare Theatre, so you’re practically guaranteed to laugh, cry and stuff your face by the end. Plus, Justin’s a real nice guy who’d like to pay his mortgage and not have to dress his two daughters in potato sacks and go back to moonlighting regularly as a plasma donor.

Look for Hero House at your local comic book shop or bookstore this November!

My buddy Rob just tipped me off to almost the perfect contest for me. Every year at San Diego Comic Con, there’s a huge blood donor drive. And this year, anyone donating blood will get the chance to enter a raffle to win a Captain America-painted Honda Element! I’ll let that sink in. Here, this’ll help. An actual image of the far from subdued prize:

I can’t imagine anyone on the planet wanting to drive this thing around. Other than me, that is. Being a big Captain America fan, I’d love it. And coming from a guy who still has his denim jacket from the ’80s covered in Twisted Sister and Dee Snider patches, I pretty much have no shame.

So why am I ticked off at this contest? Because I have a history of fainting when I give blood. And I”m not talking about blood donating, I’m talking about a basic blood test you get at your doctors. Yeah, yeah. I’m a wuss. I know. I don’t want to faint, it just happens. Happened probably about 3 or 4 times in my life, though there were half a dozen other times I felt it coming on, but stopped it in time somehow. So I don’t think I’ll be entering this here contest. (Although there is a “no purchase necessary” clause. So maybe I still can…) But yeah, I can totally picture my bad-ass self pulling up to the drive-through window at White Castle in this sucker. Ah, to (American) dream…
